The Magic of Peppermint White Chocolate: A Holiday Love Affair
For many, the pairing of peppermint and white chocolate is the quintessential taste of the holiday season. This enchanting combination evokes cozy memories, festive gatherings, and the joy of winter celebrations. Our family’s love affair with this flavor duo began years ago with a comforting mug of Peppermint White Hot Chocolate. It quickly transcended a simple beverage to become our cherished Christmas Eve tradition, sipped around the twinkling Christmas tree.
The popularity of this flavor profile inspired its integration into countless other holiday desserts. Beyond hot cocoa, we’ve crafted delectable soft cookies studded with white chocolate chips and a hint of peppermint, and charming thumbprint cookies adorned with festive candy cane kisses. This fudge recipe is another testament to how beautifully peppermint and white chocolate complement each other, creating a symphony of sweet and cool notes that is simply irresistible.
Key Ingredients for Peppermint Perfection
Achieving that signature peppermint flavor requires the right ingredients. Here’s a rundown of our favorites and how to use them effectively:
- Andes Peppermint Thins: These classic chocolates offer a smooth, balanced peppermint flavor and melt beautifully.
- Andes Peppermint Crunch Baking Chips: These specialized chips are fantastic for incorporating a crunchy texture and burst of mint throughout your fudge, or as a delightful topping.
- Crushed Candy Canes: For a more traditional holiday aesthetic and a sharp, sweet peppermint kick, crushed candy canes are an excellent choice for garnish.
- Peppermint Extract: Use with caution! Peppermint extract is potent. A tiny amount can go a long way. When using peppermint-flavored candies, extract might not even be necessary, as it can easily overpower other flavors. For this particular fudge recipe, the Andes crunch baking chips provide ample peppermint flavor, so no additional extract is needed. This ensures a balanced taste without being overly strong.
The Secret to Unforgettably Soft Fudge: Marshmallow Fluff
While many fudge recipes rely solely on chocolate and sweetened condensed milk, our preferred method incorporates marshmallow fluff. And for good reason! Recipes using only the two primary ingredients often result in fudge that is overly firm, sometimes even hard. Marshmallow fluff is the unsung hero, adding a delightful chewiness and a pleasant, tender softness that transforms the texture of the fudge from merely good to absolutely sublime. It ensures every bite is smooth and creamy, a truly luxurious experience for your palate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Making Fudge
Can I use baking chocolate instead of chocolate chips?
It is generally not recommended to substitute baking chocolate for chocolate chips in this recipe. Baking chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa butter, which means it melts to a thinner consistency. If used in this fudge, it could result in a product that is too soft or even runny, failing to achieve the desired firm-but-creamy texture. Chocolate chips, on the other hand, contain stabilizers that help them hold their shape and contribute to the ideal fudge consistency when melted and combined with other ingredients.
What if I can’t find Andes Peppermint Crunch Baking Chips?
Andes Peppermint Crunch Baking Chips can sometimes be a bit elusive, especially outside of the peak holiday season. Larger grocery stores or specialty baking supply shops are usually your best bet, so check those first. If you’re still having trouble locating them, don’t despair! A simple and effective substitution is to use Andes Peppermint Thins. Just unwrap approximately 6-7 ounces of the thins and chop them into small pieces. This method works wonderfully and I’ve used it many times with excellent results. You’ll still get that wonderful peppermint flavor and a delightful texture, just be sure to chop them finely enough to distribute evenly throughout the fudge.

Ingredients
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
- 3 cups white chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup Andes peppermint crunch baking chips
- 7 oz marshmallow fluff
- 1 1/2 cups Andes peppermint crunch baking chips for topping
Instructions
- Preparation Note: If Andes peppermint crunch baking chips are unavailable, Andes peppermint thins can be used as a substitute. Simply unwrap and chop them into small pieces before beginning.
- Line a 9×9 inch baking dish with parchment paper, ensuring it covers the bottom and extends up the sides. Lightly grease the parchment paper with a non-stick baking spray or a thin layer of butter to prevent the fudge from sticking.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the white chocolate chips, 1/2 cup of Andes peppermint crunch baking chips, and the marshmallow fluff. Set this bowl aside for now.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the sweetened condensed milk. Continue heating the mixture over medium heat, stirring slowly and constantly to ensure it heats through completely without scorching or burning the condensed milk.
- Carefully pour the hot condensed milk and butter mixture into the bowl containing the white chocolate chips, peppermint chips, and marshmallow fluff. Begin stirring slowly at first to prevent splattering of the hot mixture, then gradually increase your stirring speed until all ingredients are thoroughly combined and the mixture is smooth and glossy. If using a metal mixing bowl, consider holding it with an oven mitt as it will become warm. A thin rubber spatula works best for mixing to ensure everything is incorporated.
- Pour the prepared fudge mixture into the parchment-lined baking dish and spread it evenly using your spatula. Allow it to cool for a few minutes on the counter. While still slightly warm, evenly spread the remaining 1 1/2 cups of Andes peppermint crunch baking chips over the top. Gently press them into the fudge a little bit so they adhere.
- Let the fudge stand at room temperature until it has cooled completely. Once at room temperature, cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap and transfer it to the refrigerator. Chill for 2-4 hours, or until the fudge is firm and fully set.
- Once thoroughly chilled and firm, use the parchment paper to lift the fudge out of the pan. Place it on a cutting board and cut into desired pieces using a sharp knife.

Tips for Perfect Peppermint White Chocolate Fudge Every Time
Achieving fudge perfection is easier than you think with a few helpful tips:
- Quality Ingredients Matter: Start with high-quality white chocolate chips and fresh butter. The better your ingredients, the better your fudge will taste.
- Gentle Heat is Key: When melting butter and condensed milk, keep the heat at medium. Rushing the process with high heat can scorch the milk, resulting in an off-flavor and texture. Stir constantly to ensure even heating.
- Don’t Over-Mix: Once you add the hot milk mixture to the chocolate chips and marshmallow fluff, stir just until smooth. Over-mixing can introduce too much air and affect the final texture.
- Proper Pan Preparation: Lining your baking dish with parchment paper and greasing it thoroughly is crucial for easy removal of the fudge. This simple step prevents sticking and makes cutting much neater.
- Even Spreading: Once poured into the dish, spread the fudge evenly to ensure uniform thickness. This helps with consistent setting and makes for more attractive pieces.
- Cooling Patience: Allow the fudge to cool completely at room temperature before transferring it to the refrigerator. This gradual cooling helps it set properly without developing a grainy texture.
- Chill Thoroughly: Don’t rush the chilling process. A minimum of 2-4 hours in the refrigerator is essential for the fudge to firm up completely, making it easy to cut into clean squares.
- Clean Cuts: For neat squares, use a sharp, warm knife. You can warm your knife by running it under hot water and wiping it dry between cuts.
Serving and Storing Your Holiday Fudge
Once your Peppermint White Chocolate Fudge is perfectly set and cut, it’s ready to be enjoyed! This festive treat is ideal for a variety of occasions:
- Holiday Platters: Arrange the colorful squares on a festive dessert platter alongside other Christmas cookies and candies.
- Edible Gifts: Package individual pieces or small batches in decorative boxes or cello bags with ribbons for thoughtful homemade gifts. Your friends and family will adore this sweet gesture!
- Coffee & Hot Cocoa Companion: Serve a small piece of fudge with a warm cup of coffee, tea, or even a glass of the Peppermint White Hot Chocolate that inspired it all.
Storage Instructions:
To keep your fudge fresh and delicious:
- Room Temperature: If stored in an airtight container at room temperature, the fudge will maintain its quality for up to 3-5 days. Be sure to keep it away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
- Refrigerator: For longer storage, keep the fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. The cold will help maintain its texture and freshness.
- Freezer: For extended storage, cut the fudge into pieces and wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. It can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for a few hours before serving.
Always ensure the fudge is stored in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out or absorbing other odors.
