Easter M&M Rice Krispie Eggs: Your Go-To No-Bake Holiday Treat

Easter brings with it a season of renewal, vibrant colors, and delightful treats. While chocolate bunnies and jelly beans often steal the spotlight, there’s something uniquely charming and effortlessly festive about homemade Rice Krispies treats. For many, including myself, Easter has become synonymous with crafting various Rice Krispies creations. It’s a cherished tradition, year after year, to experiment with new themes and designs for these beloved crispy snacks.

I find immense joy in seeing the excitement on faces when these colorful treats are unveiled. In previous years, our Easter repertoire included imaginative delights like Krispies Chocolate Egg Baskets and Coconut Krispies Easter Eggs. Each creation brought its own unique flair to the celebration, cementing Rice Krispies treats as a staple in our holiday baking – perhaps the only time of year I regularly make them! The beauty of these treats lies in their adaptability, offering a perfect canvas for seasonal creativity.

This year, while browsing the festive aisles, a bag of pastel-colored Easter M&Ms caught my eye. Instantly, inspiration struck. My boys absolutely adore M&Ms, so combining these colorful candies with our traditional Rice Krispies treats seemed like a brilliant idea. The result? A stunning and incredibly popular snack that was devoured almost as quickly as it was made. I even took some to my sister’s competition, where they were a resounding success among her friends and fellow competitors. (She proudly secured her third regional champion title for her solo dance performance – a truly amazing achievement!). The treats, much like her performance, were a total hit!

These delightful M&M Rice Krispie Eggs are absolutely perfect for Easter parties, school functions, and backyard egg hunts!

Imagine the smiles these cheerful, egg-shaped treats will bring to any gathering. Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows
  • 3-4 tbsp marshmallow fluff
  • 10.9 oz bag Easter M&Ms

Instructions

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine butter and marshmallows. Heat in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir well, then cook for an additional 45 seconds, or until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
  2. Gently fold the Rice Krispies cereal into the melted marshmallow mixture until evenly coated.
  3. Line a large baking pan (a 13×9 inch pan works perfectly) with parchment paper, extending it up the sides to create “handles.” Lightly grease the parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  4. Press the Rice Krispie mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Use gentle pressure; avoid compacting too much, which can make the treats hard. Chill in the refrigerator for approximately 15-20 minutes to set.
  5. Once set, lift the mixture out of the pan using the parchment paper. Use an egg-shaped cookie cutter to cut out individual Rice Krispie eggs. For easier handling and to prevent stickiness, lightly grease your hands with butter or cooking spray while shaping.
  6. Using a small plastic spatula or a knife, thinly spread marshmallow fluff over the sides and top of each Rice Krispie egg. This acts as a delicious adhesive for the M&Ms.
  7. Working quickly before the fluff sets, gently press the Easter M&Ms onto the coated sides and top of the eggs. Arrange them randomly or in a pattern for a decorative finish.

The Enduring Appeal of Rice Krispies Treats

Rice Krispies treats have been a nostalgic favorite for generations, and for good reason. Their simple preparation, satisfying crunch, and inherent versatility make them a perfect foundation for countless variations. The classic combination of butter, marshmallows, and crispy rice cereal creates a confection that appeals to almost everyone. For Easter, transforming these beloved treats into egg shapes adds an extra layer of festivity, making them not just a snack, but a fun activity for the whole family to participate in.

Tips for Perfect M&M Rice Krispie Easter Eggs

Achieving the perfect balance of chewy and crispy is key to outstanding Rice Krispies treats. Here are a few tips to ensure your M&M Easter Eggs are nothing short of spectacular:

  • Fresh Marshmallows Are Best: Always use fresh marshmallows for the best texture. Stale marshmallows can lead to hard, brittle treats.
  • Don’t Overcook the Marshmallows: Melt the marshmallows just until smooth. Overcooking can cause them to seize up and result in tough treats.
  • Gentle Pressing is Key: When pressing the mixture into the pan, do so gently. Compressing them too firmly will make them dense and hard instead of delightfully chewy.
  • Grease Your Hands: For easier handling when cutting and shaping the eggs, lightly grease your hands with butter or a little cooking spray. This prevents the sticky mixture from clinging.
  • Marshmallow Fluff as Adhesive: The thin layer of marshmallow fluff is essential for adhering the M&Ms. Apply it just before adding the candies so it’s still sticky.
  • Chill for Setting: Don’t skip the chilling step. It helps the treats firm up, making them easier to cut and decorate.

Creative Variations and Customizations

While M&Ms are fantastic, don’t hesitate to get creative with other candies and decorations:

  • Different Candies: Use other Easter-themed candies like jelly beans, mini chocolate eggs, or colorful sprinkles.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: After applying M&Ms, drizzle melted white chocolate or milk chocolate over the eggs for an extra touch.
  • Food Coloring: Add a few drops of food coloring to your melted marshmallow mixture to create brightly colored Rice Krispies eggs before adding the candies. Pastel colors like pink, blue, or yellow would be perfect for Easter.
  • Flavor Extracts: A dash of vanilla extract or almond extract can enhance the flavor of your treats. Add it when the marshmallows are almost fully melted.
  • Alternative Shapes: If you don’t have an egg-shaped cookie cutter, you can cut them into squares or use other spring-themed cutters like bunnies or flowers.

Serving and Storing Your Easter Treats

These M&M Rice Krispie Easter Eggs are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored to prolong their deliciousness. Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate them, but allow them to come to room temperature before serving for the best texture. If you plan to make them ahead for a party, preparing them the day before is ideal.

Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy dessert, a fun activity with kids, or a standout contribution to an Easter potluck, these M&M Rice Krispie Easter Eggs tick all the boxes. Their vibrant appearance and classic flavor will undoubtedly bring smiles and festive cheer to your holiday celebrations.
